The Methodist Church, Upper Myanmar (former Burma) was established in 1887. When the British conquered Upper Burma, Burma was under control of the British Government. Amongst the British Army, there were soldiers who belong to the Methodist Church. For this, the British methodist Missionary Society sent Rev.G.H.Bateson to Mandalay, Upper Burma to be a chaplain for a term of one year in 1887. After Rev.Bateson's arriving of three weeks Rev.W.Ripley Winston and Rev.John Milton Brown also arrived in Mandalay. Therefore, they settled down the Methodist Church in Mandalay. Later the Methodism was spread through Upper Burma. The Methodist Church was one of the Overseas Districts (Burma District) under the Bristish Conference.
After getting Independent all Missionaries left from Burma in 1964 and all the Mission Schools, Hospitals and other Institutions were nationalized. The Methodist Church in Upper Burma has become autonomous in 1964. When the Church became autonomous there were initially three Districts: (1) Mandalay District; (2) Tahan District; (3) Maingdaungphai (Homalin) District. At present, there are 8 Districts and 2 Area Councils and 27610 total Communities. The Conference Headquarters is located in Mandalay. |
